In the framework of the Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network (MOON), the University of Athens Ocean Physics And Modelling (OPAM) group provides a series of operational forecasting products:

Aegean-Levantine Eddy Resolving Model (ALERMO) Forecast System

An upgraded version of the ALERMO model with a 1o/30 of horizontal resolution was developed within the framework MFSTEP (Mediterranean Forecasting System - Towards Environmental Predictions). ALERMO is one-way nested to a Mediterranean OGCM (1o/16 × 1o/16) running operationally on a daily basis, providing 5-days forecast of the ocean circulation. It is based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) and forced by 1o/10 SKIRON atmospheric system ( Model Details ). Coastal and shelf foreacsting systems, also developed under MFSTEP, are nested in ALERMO forecasting system.

North Aegean High Resolution Forecast

A very high-resolution forecasting model with a 1o/60 of horizontal resolution was developed in the North Aegean region one-way nested to ALERMO forcasting system (1o/30 × 1o/30) running operationally on a daily basis, providing 4-days forecast of the ocean circulation. It is based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) and forced by 1o/10 SKIRON atmospheric system ( ALERMO Model Details ).

The TRITON Wave Forecast system runs daily (1 cycle) using atmospheric data from the SKIRON Weather Forecast system, which runs twice daily and provides 72-hours forecast ahead. The wave forecast system issues 66-hour forecasts of significant wave height and direction.

The wave forecast system setup consists of 14 one-way nested overlapping grids covering the areas of: 1) Global Ocean, 2) Mediterranean and Black Sea, 3) Eastern Mediterranean, 4) Aegean and Ionian Seas, 5) North Aegean Sea, 6) South Aegean Sea, 7) Ionian Sea, 8) Central Aegean Sea (Cyclades region), 9) Cretan Sea, 10) Saronikos Gulf, 11) Saronikos Coast, 12) Eastern Attica Coast, 13) Thermaikos and 14) Adriatic Sea.
