ALERMO Ocean Forecasting System
In the framework of the Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network (MOON), the University of Athens OPAM group provides operational forecasting products in:
- Aegean-Levantine region (1o/30)
- Aegean-Levantine region (1o/50)
- On-line ALERMO validation(1o/50)
- North Aegean Sea
- ALERMO OpenDAP Server
Aegean-Levantine (ALERMO) Forecast System
A version of the ALERMO model with 1o/30 horizontal resolution was developed within the framework MFSTEP project and is recently upgraded to 1o/50 horizontal resolution and assimilation of oceanic data in the framework of the ECOOP project. The system provides daily 5-days forecast of the ocean characteristics and circulation in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. ALERMO is one-way nested to a Mediterranean OGCM (1o/16 horizontal resolution). The modelling system is based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) and forced by 1o/20 SKIRON atmospheric system ( ALERMO Model Details ). The forecasting system (1o/50) is validated daily with satellite Sea Surface Temperature observations. Coastal and shelf forecasting systems, also developed under MFSTEP, are nested in ALERMO forecasting system.
North Aegean Forecast
A very high-resolution forecasting model with a 1o/60 of horizontal resolution was developed in the North Aegean region one-way nested to ALERMO (1o/30) running operationally on a daily basis, providing 4-days forecast of the ocean circulation. It is based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) and forced by 1o/20 SKIRON atmospheric system ( ALERMO Model Details ).
The North Aegean Forecasting system is coupled with DIAVLOS Oil-spill forecasting tool.
